Easter Sunday: the Start of Earth Week

Earth Week, the week-long celebration promoting environmental awareness and action, begins the week of Earth Day which falls on 22nd April. This year,  Earth Week starts on Easter Sunday for the first time since 2011 and the last time till 2038. The  theme for Earth Day 2025 is, “Our Power, Our Planet,” focusing on renewable energy and climate action.

This Earth Day let us regard the work of ecological justice as Easter work.

At the Easter Vigil, the Exultet or Easter Proclamation which follows the blessing of the new fire and procession into the church, all creation is called on to sing praise in response to Christ’s resurrection. In the scripture readings and prayers, we hear again how God loved the whole world into being and how in the Genesis story, the very first reading, we are entrusted with the care of all creation.

This Earth Day and Earth Week, let us renew our commitment to working for ecological justice, inspired by the hope of new life that Easter gifts us.
