Held on 22 March every year since 1993, World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.
This year’s theme is ‘Groundwater- making the invisible visible’. Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more critical.
In a message to the World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal, Pope Francis reiterated the human right to drinking water and sanitation, linking access to safe water with the inalienable right to life. “Water”, he said ” is a gift from God and a common heritage that should be universally used for each generation.”
